BACKGROUND

The PURE Pemba urban resilience through ecosystem-based approaches project is part of the EU funded Green and Smart Cities Sasa Programme. A collaboration between Oikos East Africa (lead partner), Isituto Oikos and African Architecture Matters.

 

The project’s main objective is to make the main urban areas of North Pemba safe, inclusive, resilient and sustainable by promoting integrated urban development through a multi-stakeholder approach. Specifically, the action aims at enhancing urban resilience in Wete and Micheweni urban areas by increasing access to basic services especially for women and children. 

 

As part of the project, African Architecture Matters is planning to upgrade a number of playgrounds and sport fields in Wete and Micheweni area using a participatory approach. We will organize a number of workshops together with children and youth discussing and designing the public spaces they would like to see. But we cannot do this without you!

wHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR

  • A background in visual arts, design, architecture, carpentry or similar field

  • Ability to develop hands-on workshops with children

  • Understanding of public space and the variety of usages

  • Ability to translate ideas in design concepts for the selected spaces

  • Open-minded and outgoing mindset

  • Communicatively strong with people of different age-ranges

  • Native Swahili speaker, good with English

  • Pemban born creatives have a preference

WHAT WILL YOU DO

  • Develop and execute the creative workshops with children and community together with the AAM team. (We have the ability to source a variety of materials within the budget to execute the workshops so we can think freely)

  • Organize and lead one key workshop.

  • Lead and join discussions with parents, shehas and local government on management, maintenance and operation of public spaces. 

  • Prepare the output of the workshops for a showcase event at two locations.

  • Write a short report on the works and further recommendations.

  • Assist the AAM team to develop the results of the workshops in a usable state to create accurate site plans and designs. The spaces will only be upgraded at a later stage by the AAM team for which the workshops serve as a basis.

WHAT CAN WE OFFER YOU

  • A 10 day trip to Pemba experiencing the Pemba community and lifestyle while increasing your work experience.

  • Ferry return ticket for those living outside Pemba. Transport to location for those within Pemba. 

  • Daily allowance (90,000Tsh per day) for the duration of the 10-day stay in Pemba which can cover food, stay (estimated at 25k per night) and local transport. 

  • 4 day allowance (90,000Tsh per day) for preparation and conclusion of works.

  • This project can be seen as internship or short-term work placement. There will be no additional salary.
